SOC 3014 Gender Relations: Getting
Help

VT Library Home Page

Just like coming in the doors of Newman Library gives you access to all the materials and services located in the library, coming to the library home page will give you access to all of our digital resources and services.

Off Campus Sign in

Some of the library's resources—databasesebooksejournals, and selected Virginia Tech electronic theses and dissertations - are restricted to currently employed faculty/staff, currently enrolled students registered in degree or credit courses, and retirees. If you are on campus, you have automatic access to these resources.  If you are off campus, you will need to use the off-campus sign in area to have access to these resources.

  1. Use the Off Campus Sign In button on any library page, enter your Virginia Tech PID and password, then hit the Submit button.
  2. You Are Signed In

Authorized users will then pass through to the library page, where restricted resources can be accessed. TheOff Campus Sign Inbutton will now displayYou Are Signed In, to indicate you have been authenticated. If this button changes back to Off Campus Sign In, you have somehow been disconnected from the service and will need to sign in again.
  3. The links to restricted resources will look different than the on-campus direct links. Proxied links include the string ezproxy.lib.vt.edu in the URL. If you do not see this URL pattern when you attempt to access a database, ebook, or ejournal, you have been disconnected from the service and will need to sign in again.

Where to get help?

Reference desk - Located on the second floor, The Reference desk is staffed many of the hours Newman Library is open. We answer questions in person, though the Ask a Librarian service, and over the phone. We can help locate material, recommend databases, and assist with library technology.

Ask a Librarian - Click the Ask a Librarian button on the right hand side of the library home page to start chat with the reference staff in Newman Library. Supply your name, email address, Virginia Tech affiliation, and the nature of your question and the area to which your question most closely pertains.

Email - Send a question to the library's reference staff. Priority is given to Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff, and to questions pertaining to Virginia Tech library collections. Questions are answered as quickly as possible, normally within a few hours, but if referred to a specialist additional time may be necessary. You can receive an email confirmation that your question has been received.

Subject Guides and College Librarians

The library has created a subject guide for every major in the university.  The subject guide contains discipline specific databases.  On these pages you can also find the name of your subject librarian and their contact information.  There is a link to the subject guides found on the library home page under the quick links to the right of the search box.
