Effective Searching for Information and Data

Library Assignment 1: Happy Birthday!

Choose a statistician, living or dead, who has the same birthday as you. Using the skills you've learned from our librarian, research the life of this person (both personal and professional information). Write a 1-2 page, double-spaced biography about this person, including (but not limited to) the following information:

  1. The name and birthplace of the person

  2. The reason you chose this person (other than the fact that he or she has the same birthday as you)

  3. Their personal and professional history

  4. Their specific area of expertise within statistics

  5. Anything else you would like to add

Prepare the following:

  1. A 1-2 page double-spaced biography of the person. This should include correctly cited information from a minimum of 2 sources. One of these sources should be a reputable encyclopedia (hint hint), a written article, or a book (any of which can be digital, but must be reliable). The other can be a reputable website from which you trust the information.

  2. A quick, informal 2-minute oral presentation about the person. You will present your 2-minute oral biography to the class. Because the oral portion is so short, there is no need to prepare a PowerPoint presentation or other visual aid. You will simply tell the class what you learned about this person. Due to the short time period of the class, please make sure to keep your oral presentation to 2 minutes.
