About FBRI HS&T Library

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Health Sciences and Technology Library is housed in the new Biomedical Research Addition building (Riverside 4) located on the Health Sciences and Technology Campus in Roanoke, Virginia.

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Health Sciences and Technology Library joins the Virginia Tech Carilion School Of Medicine Library in providing high-quality information services, access to collections, and additional resources to support the educational and research needs of programs related to the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Health Sciences and Technology Library also provides biomedical researchers access to a variety of tools to support the collaborative and creative nature of biomedical research.  The library houses a 3D printing studio, a data visualization studio, and a studio that supports long-term team research.  The space also supports teaching and learning, on-demand guest lectures, workshops and professional development, including topics regarding intellectual property (copyrights, patents, etc. for educational materials, publishing, 3D printing, medical device design, etc.), research processes (project planning and management, research ethics, data visualization, writing/publishing, project documentation archiving, communicating research, etc.), creation of interactive assignments and/or online learning materials and experiential education initiatives.

Head, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute Health Sciences and Technology Library  Roberto Silva is the Head of the FBRI HS&T Library. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Virginia and a Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He has worked at and managed different research and clinical laboratories during his career. Prior to working at Virginia Tech, he worked as the Programmer/Lead Library Technician for the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Library in Japan where he developed and oversaw several programs geared to support the work of several different communities of users. 

Jerelle Hamilton

FBRI HS&T Library Assistant Jerelle Hamilton has 20+ years of experience in customer service and 6 years of experience managing stores / spaces and equipment. In the last 2 years, Jerelle has switched to the field of libraries. In the position of Library Assistant for the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute for Health Sciences & Technology Library, he has taken over the majority of 3d printing projects, handles point of service for the FBRI HS&T Library, and uses information sources to assist patrons with information needs.

Director, Health Sciences Libraries Kiri DeBose oversees all three Health Sciences Libraries (FBRI HS&T, VetMed, VTCSOM) for Virginia Tech. Her subject background is in Animal Science and she also serves as the Head of the Veterinary Medicine Library. Prior to her current role, she served as the College Librarian for Natural Resources & Environment and brings a OneHealth approach to supporting those in the health sciences.  Kiri provides a wide variety of services including:
  • Liaison to animal science, veterinary medicine, and population health sciences
  • Systematic reviews and evidence synthesis
  • Research management
  • Open science and research practices
  • Collaboration and team science practices
