User Support

Data Services staff are available to provide walk in support for VTechData and other issues every Wednesday from 1pm-3pm in Port, the Digital Research Commons. If you would like to schedule a consultation at another time, please email dataservices@vt.edu with a brief description of your issue and some times that you would like to meet.

If you would like to ask a question or report an issue about VTechData, please email vtechdata@vt.edu.

Data Services is the group at University Libraries who manages VTechData. The mission of Data Services is to deliver a suite of research data services to the Virginia Tech Community, including data management and informatics training for researchers, one-on-one consultations on data-related challenges, collaboration on research projects, and curatorial services for research data. More information about the services offered can be found on the Research and Informatics website.

VTechData Definitions

A file is one deposited object uploaded by the user. Users may upload up to 100 files at one time, as long as each file is smaller than 200 MBs and all files are collectively smaller than 1 GB.

A file can be text, qualitative data, quantitative data, an image, or any other research product.

Upon upload, each file becomes an item. An item consists of a file and associated metadata about that file.  One or more items may comprise a dataset.

In VTechData the term dataset refers to one or more items that make up a single project or a phase of a larger project.

Associating multiple datasets as parts of a larger project must be done via file naming conventions. Please email us at vtechdata@vt.edu if you have any questions or need assistance with this.
