Geospatial Mapping Services at Virginia Tech: Past Training Resources

This is a guide to help Virginia Tech community members discover geospatial data and Geographic Information System (GIS) resources and services available for their research.
Introduction to Geospatial Mapping Workshop Introduction to Mapmaking in ArcGIS Online
This workshop was conducted online via Zoom on January 23rd, 2024. Below are the presentation slides, a handout to give you more information on the geospatial mapping topic, and the Zoom recording of the workshop This training was conducted online via Zoom on April 16th, 2024. Below are the presentation slides, a handout to give you more information on the making a map in ArcGIS Online, and the Zoom recording of the training

This Introduction to Geospatial Mapping workshop covers what Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial data, and geospatial mapping are. It also covers geospatial data types, sources, and file formats, and finally introduce participants to different types of geospatial mapping tools and software. The workshop is customized to cater to students, faculty, and researchers across various disciplines.

The Introduction to Mapmaking in ArcGIS Online is a beginner-friendly training that dives into the practical side of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this training you will learn how to create interactive maps with ease using ArcGIS Online.

We demonstrate and walk you through the steps on how to create your own maps, add data layers, visualize information effectively, and share your creations (maps) with others within Virginia Tech or outside!
This training is practical and caters to anyone, whether you are a student, faculty, researcher, or simply curious about mapping. No prior experience is required; however, if you’re interested in learning more about the theoretical side of geospatial mapping, please feel free to review this past training.

Foundations of Geospatial Mapping (FBRI) Introduction to Geospatial Mapping and ArcGIS Online
This was a hybrid session conducted in person at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) at VTC in Roanoke and online with the Northern Virginia campus on September 25th, 2024. Below are the presentation slides and Zoom recording of the session. This session was conducted online via Zoom on October 29th, 2024. Below are the presentation slides, a handout to give you more information on the making a map in ArcGIS Online, and the Zoom recording of the session.

The Foundations of Geospatial Mapping session focused on introducing the concept of geospatial mapping covering the basics of what Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial data, and geospatial mapping are. It will also cover geospatial data types, sources, and file formats, and finally introduce participants to different types of geospatial mapping tools and software. This session is customized to cater to biomedical students, faculty, and researchers whether you are a beginner or seeking to refresh your GIS skills. It will give examples of how geospatial mapping and geospatial data have been used in the past to inform biomedical research and applications.
