Virginia Tech Data Repository: Terms of Use

Data in the Virginia Tech Data Repository are openly accessible to all Users for download or other use at no cost. 

In general data are made available for use with few if any restrictions. Each dataset has an associated license appended that will specify any restrictions placed on use.

Virginia Tech Data Repository Users are expected to abide by Virginia Tech’s Policy 7000: Acceptable Use and Administration of Computer and Communication Systems and other University policies where they are applicable.

Virginia Tech Data Repository Users, in downloading or using data, agree that they

• Will not make any use of data to identify or otherwise infringe the privacy or confidentiality rights of individuals discovered inadvertently or intentionally in the data.
• Will not use the data for any illegal or unethical purposes.
• Will give appropriate attribution to the Publisher(s) and/or Depositor(s) of the data in any publication that employs data provided through the Virginia Tech Data Repository.

Data are offered with no warranty or claim of fitness for any purpose. In no event shall the Virginia Tech Data Repository Administrators, the University Libraries, or Virginia Tech be liable for any impacts arising from use of the Virginia Tech Data Repository, or download and/or use of data provided through the Virginia Tech Data Repository.

Under the VT Policy on Ownership and Control of Research Results and the VT Policy on Intellectual Property, Virginia Tech has certain Intellectual Property rights and disclosing data that might jeopardize IP rights is prohibited.

If Virginia Tech Data Repository Users encounter such data or data that could be used or disclosed for illegal or unethical purposes, they should notify the Virginia Tech Data Repository Administrators at vtdatarepo-g@vt.edu.

The quality of datasets and documentation provided through the Virginia Tech Data Repository depends heavily on information provided by the Depositor and/or creator of the data. In most cases the Virginia Tech Data Repository Administrators will not be able to provide technical support in use of data provided through the Virginia Tech Data Repository. Virginia Tech Data Repository Users will need to contact the Depositor and/or creator of the data for this support.

The Virginia Tech Data Repository may modify these Terms of Use from time to time without notice to you. Any modifications to the Terms of Use shall become effective immediately upon posting.   By making use of the Repository after such modification, you are agreeing to the modified Terms of Use then in effect.
