Information Resources

The University Libraries provides access to over 785 databases ranging across all subjects and disciplines.  Below are resources related specifically to health and medicine topics. 

Health/Medicine Databases - VT login

  • There are over 90 databases related to health and medicine that the University Libraries provides access to
  • Questions about access can be sent to vtcsomlibrary@vt.edu 
     

Health/Medicine Databases - Carilion (OpenAthens login)

  • These resources are provided by Carilion and require their login information. 
  • Questions about access are handled by Jane Burnette, Clinical Research Librarian at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital
     

Clerkship Resources for Pediatrics

  • Tabs include books, core resources, drug formularies, practice guidelines, and mobile resources
     

Patient Education Resources

  • This guide provides links to resources geared specifically for patient education materials.

Data Services

Below are just a few of the many services offered by the Data Services unit in the University Libraries to support how data is gathered, analyzed, shared, and curated throughout and beyond the research cycle.  

Data Management Plans

  • This guide provides information on what to include in Data Management Plan requirements when applying for grants.

Training & Education

  • The University Libraries provides several workshops throughout the year.
  • For this activity, start by searching for the word "data" to find upcoming workshops and in the question document below, list those that may be of interest to you. 
     

Guide to the Virginia Tech Data Repository

  • There is a continued push to making data from research studies more accessible; and for de-identified data obtained from federal grants and other government sources to be made publicly available. The University Libraries manages and maintains the Virginia Tech Data Repository to help researchers meet these requirements. 
  • The guide linked above provides more information across the tabs listed as to how the data repository may be a possible option for you to deposit, store, and maintain your research data.

OA Publishing Support

Open Access (OA) has been significantly changing the scholarly landscape.  With a goal to make scholarship more available by removing barriers such as subscriptions and paywalls, providing an OA version of ones scholarship has become mandated by several granting agencies. 

University Libraries' Guide on Open Access 

  • OA has been significantly changing the scholarly landscape. The guide linked above describes what OA is, links to finding reputable OA publishers, copyright, policies, and other aspects related to OA. 
     

Open Access Subvention Fund

  • Each fiscal year, funds are provided to offset the costs of publishing scholarly article processing fees. The guide linked above provides information about this funding source, including caps, discounts with publishers, and information about VT's OA policy (and Policy 13000). 
     

Virginia Tech Publishing

  • VT's full-service publishing unit, they focus on providing digital-first, Open Access content to support the publishing needs of the Virginia Tech community. They publish scholarly and educational materials in multiple formats for wide dissemination and permanent preservation.
