Introduction to Scholarly Databases

At University Libraries, we have more than 500 different scholarly databases that you can use.  For your research in, I recommend the following databases.  Still not sure about which database(s) are best for your research? Try browsing a few subject guides, or look through the full research database list.

Finding Full Text of Resources

When using databases, it is important to know the two main ways one can access full-text through the University Libraries. Scholarly resources are not helpful if one is unable to access the full text of the resources they're interested in.

Get VText Button

  • Get VText is the first option for getting access to the full-text of resources. Click here to learn more about Get VText.

LibKey Nomad

  • LibKey Nomad is the second option for getting access to the full-text of resources. Click here to learn more about LibKey Nomad.

Between using Get VText and LibKey Nomad, you should have access to full-text resources the University Libraries have access to. While the Libraries has access to many resources through our many subscriptions, please note you may at times want a resource we do not have access to. If this is the case, put in an Interlibrary Loan request and we can get you access. While at Virginia Tech, you should not need to pay out of pocket for resources.

Looking for full text?

Remember to look for the Get VText icon:
If that doesn't work, don't hesitate to contact your librarian for help accessing the full text of an article.

Is that journal peer-reviewed?

Looking for sources where submissions were peer reviewed before publication?
Check a journal title in Ulrichs Web to see if its 'referred' (peer-reviewed).
Check on a journal website to find out about publication and editorial practices such as whether or not they include peer-review in the process.
