Elements at Virginia Tech: FAR College Templates

Virginia Tech uses an activities data system to collect and manage information about research and scholarship, creative works, teaching, extension, outreach, and service activities.

Most colleges have their own Faculty Activity Report (FAR) template, available for download below and on the University Data Commons (UDC).

To download the template on UDC, select your college from the dropdown menu and then select the correct report type (sometimes it's the Activity Summary, and sometimes colleges create specific reports, such as 'CALS Faculty Activity Report.')

These templates give specific instructions about how to use the Elements system so that the template will be correctly populated with your activities from the past year. Download your college template below for more information.

Templates explain what data is exported from Elements into reports like College eFARs and Promotion & Tenure Dossiers.

In the screenshot below you can see a portion of the P&T Dossier template.  Text in red explains where and how the data must be entered into Elements for it to be included in that section of the P&T Dossier report.

Focusing in on the last example in the screenshot above, you can see how the red instructions are applied in the screenshot below.

  • For the section on 'E. Editorships, curatorships, etc. >>> 1. Journals or other learned publications'; the template indicates that it will pull from Elements anything added with the following parameters:
    • Select 'ADD NEW' from the module on 'Professional activities'
    • Select 'Editorial/Curatorial' from the list of possible activities types
    • Select 2 specific filters when filling out the associated form for Editorial/Curatorial activities
      1. Either 'Book series' OR 'Journal' from the 'Type of publication or event' dropdown
      2. Either 'Editor/curator' OR 'Co-editor/co-curator' OR 'Associate or guest editor/curator' from the Role dropdown.

Sometimes the filters listed won't be data you complete in the activity's basic manual entry form.  Instead it will be a label you add to the item after you add it. In the screenshot below you see an example of a Filter that requires you to go to the item and use the LABELs option to add a specific label (in this case 'Diversity and inclusion).
