Elements at Virginia Tech: Profile Curation Services

Virginia Tech uses an activities data system to collect and manage information about research and scholarship, creative works, teaching, extension, outreach, and service activities.

Profile Curation Services for Virginia Tech Elements and Virginia Tech Experts

University Libraries partners with colleges, departments, centers, institutes, and other groups or units to provide initial profile curation in Virginia Tech Elements for all types of faculty, including postdoc faculty, as well as others as desired by the unit, such as: graduate students, staff. (This includes support for curation of and connection to related database researcher identifiers like ScopusID, or researcher digital persistent identifiers and profiles, such as ORCID).

Contact: experts@vt.edu for more information or to request a meeting to discuss profile curation services for your area.

This service typically includes:

  • Meeting with unit administration, such as the Dean, Associate Deans for Research and/or Faculty Affairs, or others involved in collecting, analyzing, synthesizing, and presenting unit data about research and scholarly activities (scholarly and creative works and publications, awards and fellowships, funding, teaching activities, professional engagement, outreach)
    • Identifying key data collection needs and goals for communicating insights
    • Consider taking advantage of Virginia Tech Experts public profiles as unit web pages for faculty and graduate students (staff can also be added by request). Experts public profiles are sourced from Virginia Tech Elements internal profiles that users have full access to adjust and update.
  • Developing a communication plan and data collection method (such as a Google form to collect CVs, links to existing profiles (ORCID, Google Scholar, Scopus, Researcher ID / Publons, web page), other documents or information each faculty member and/or others involved in the project have), bio, research interests, teaching statements, and other profile information for their Elements internal profile and a Virginia Tech Experts public profile - the customizable, public facing version of Elements internal profiles.
    • Working with participants to connect and update or optimize related profiles: ORCID, Google Scholar, Scopus Author Profiles
  • Providing an update to each participant once their profile in Elements is updated and related profiles are connected, with steps to review the profile and follow up about questions or changes needed, and how to make their Virginia Tech Experts public profile live.
  • Working with unit administration to Prepare unit or subgroup research impact and scholarly activities insights and visualizations using the more comprehensive data and information available once Elements and connected profiles are curated and in place
  • Providing related training (see examples on our Workshops page)
