About the Guide

The original guide was compiled by Dorothy McCombs. It was later updated by D. Jane Wills in 2001. In 2014, location information for books and other resources were updated, items no longer available were removed, and a new section for "Online Resources" was added. A separate webpage with sources for Civil War Genealogy Research has also been incorporated into the guide.

The tabbed sections of the guide list author, title, call number, and location information for suggested research publications. Please note: There may be additional resources available in the library and online.

The guide includes the following sections:
A. Introduction to Genealogical Research
B. Published Genealogies
C. Indexes to "Buried Genealogies"
D. Information on Virginia Counties and their Record-Keeping Functions
E. Published Local and County Histories
F. Government Records: Microform or Printed Copies
G. Black Resources
H. Military Records
I. Marriage Records and Vital Statistics
J. Church Records
K. Cemeteries Records
