Accessing Print Resources

Items Located in the Vet Med Library

Entrance to Vet Med Library

The Veterinary Medicine Library is located in room 292, Phase 4C, Building 146 (see our location page for additional directions and photos) and houses approximately 12,500 print volumes, anatomy displays, videos, software, and other resources.

  • Items housed in the general collection are available for anyone to browse through.
    • Length of borrowing time for regular circulating materials are checked out based on your affiliation (see "borrowing privileges") and type of material (book, journal, anatomy, etc.).
    • Special categories of materials such as unbound issues of journals, audio-visual programs, etc. are checked out by filling out a Special Permission charge-slip for each item. See "special materials" for more information.
  • Materials held in our Reserves section are only available to be borrowed by students, staff, and faculty.
    • Items held in our Reserves collection have checkout periods of 24 hours or less; borrowing time is dependent on the type of reserve classification (permanent or course).
    • We also have a list online course reserves that are available.
  • The majority of the Vet Med Library's print materials can be requested for delivery to other VT Library locations.

Students, staff, and faculty may use either their Hokie Passport or Vet Med Badge as an ID to check materials out.  Community users will nee to use their library borrowing card and a photo ID to borrow materials.

All items that are checked out are viewable in your Library Account.  Renewals for most materials can be requested through the online system or calling our front desk (540-231-6610). Some items are not renewable; other restrictions that prohibit a renewal include too many renewals, or over $20.00 in fines are on your library account.

Requesting Print Materials From Non-VT Libraries

Materials which are not owned by the University Libraries can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for Virginia Tech affiliated patrons. Use your PID/password to log into the system; first-time users will be presented with a screen to create their profile in ILLiad.

  • For Blacksburg campus users: you can have books delivered to the Vet Med Library for pick-up by selecting "Vet Med Library" as the delivery location in your ILLiad account. If you use this option, return your ILL materials either to the Vet Med or Newman Library.
    • Faculty & staff only: you can have ILL books mailed directly to your campus mailbox (with a return label to send back to the library).  Enter in your mailcode as the zip code in your ILLiad account, select "ILL" as the delivery location.
  • For users outside of the New River area: enter in your address and non-Blacksburg zip code, and select "ILL" or "VET" as the delivery location in your account (one of those should be listed in the dropdown menu, along with other campus locations).  You will receive a prepaid USPS label to return the materials at no cost to you.
