Vet Med Library Information: General

Print, Scan, Photocopy

There is an all-in-one scanner/photocopier/printer located in the library.  Before using the machine for the first time each new academic year, be sure to swipe your card in the card swipe at the machine (stripe up) to activate your account. Once activated, you will be able to send items to be printed at any library printer, on campus.

Scanning & photocopying

Scan your Hokie Passport or borrowing card and select either the scanning or photocopying option.  Funds will be subtracted from your account for each page scanned/copied.  Make sure to close out of your account when finished.


Before you print a file, select the options (e.g. double-side, color, etc). 

There are 3 options to submit a print job to be printed.  Regardless of which printing option is selected, the print job will not begin until you swipe your card at the machine. At that time, funds will be removed from your account to complete the print job.

1. Upload as many files as you want to My Print Center; they will be available for the next 48 hours on the server. 

  • Note, to print from any mobile device, you must use My Print Center.
  • You can adjust print settings (double-sided, color, etc.) once you upload your documents.

2. Another option for printing from a laptop is to install the Newman Public Printing printer driver onto your laptop  - Windows printer driver (2MB); Mac/Linux driver

  • You must select the options (e.g. double-side, color, etc) before sending to the printer. 

3. You can use the public computer in the library to print. 

  • Both My Print Center and the Newman Public Printing options are available.


Delivery of Materials

If an item you need is located at one of the other locations (and is not listed as a journal, on reserve, or "library use only"), you can request the material to be sent to the Vet Med Library using the "place hold" option in the library's catalog and delivered in the following ways:

  • Courier service, all borrowers

    There is a daily (Monday - Friday) courier service between the Veterinary Medicine Library, the other Blacksburg campus libraries, and the storage facilities. University Libraries materials from these other locations can all be checked out and returned at the Veterinary Medicine Library.

    • After clicking the "place hold" option, you'll need to sign in to your library account. Then select "Vet Med Library" as the pickup location. 
      • If your "home library" is not the Vet Med Library (or if it is and you want to change that to another location) please contact us at or 540-231-6610 to adjust this setting in your library account. .

  • Campus mail delivery of materials (Faculty & Staff only)

After clicking the "place hold" option, you'll need to sign into your library account, Then select "Faculty/Staff Campus Delivery" as the pickup location. Items will be sent in either a pink or teal mailer with a return label.  Once you are finished with the item, place the return label on the bag it came in and return the item back through campus mail.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Desktop Delivery

Use Interlibrary Loan for desktop delivery of book chapters and print articles from the University Libraries collections. The item will be scanned and sent in an electronic format. 

Materials Not Owned by the University Libraries

Materials which are not owned by the University Libraries can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for Virginia Tech affiliated patrons. Use your PID/password to log into the system; first-time users will be presented with a screen to create their profile in ILLiad.

  • For Blacksburg campus users: you can have books delivered to the Vet Med Library for pick-up by selecting "Vet Med Library" as the delivery location in your ILLiad account. If you use this option, return your ILL materials either to the Vet Med or Newman Library.
    • Faculty & staff only: you can have ILL books mailed directly to your mailbox (with a return label to send back to the library).  Enter in your mailcode as the zip code in your ILLiad account, select "ILL" as the delivery location.
  • For users outside of the New River area: enter in your zip code and select "ILL" as the delivery location.  You will receive a prepaid USPS label to return the materials at no cost to you.

Alerting services

There are several services that will alert you to new articles or that deliver the table of contents of journals directly to your email or RSS reader.

Citation managers

There are several different citation (aka bibliographic) managers available.  This guide will help you think about the features that are most applicable, so you can choose a manager that will best fit your needs. The library provides training and support for the following citation managers:

Study Spaces

The Vet Med Library is generally a quiet study space, though due to its configuration and printing services, it is not a completely silent area to study.

  • There are 14 seating spaces, each has access to a power outlet.
  • Lamps are available on a first come/first serve basis to use as needed in the library.  

Charging Locker (located in the waterfall room)

Need to charge your phone, laptop, or other device?  The library has provides a charging locker in the waterfall room with 24/7 access and charging is free.  It has both USB and outlet charging options.  

Did you forget your charging adapter?  The library has two types of chargers - "Lightening" (Mac) and "Type C" (Android) - we can provide for 4 hour loan periods during times when the library is open.
